CANTEEN LAUNCHES HARLEM TUTORING PROGRAM
Canteen magazine is helping middle-school students in Harlem master the literary arts. How? With creative writing workshops taught by Canteen authors like Gina Gionfriddo, Andrew Sean Greer, and Porochista Khakpour, as well as a professionally designed and printed magazine filled with student work.

Our students are taught to enjoy writing, and to have confidence in their ability to orate their stories. When students see their writing published, and present their work at public readings, their frustration turns to inspiration. The written and spoken word lead them on a path to lifelong success, instead of getting in the way.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Canteen magazine began its creative writing workshops in September 2008 at StreetSquash’s new facility in Harlem, New York. Our volunteer teachers are all young writers with inspiring records of publication. The best of our students’ work goes into a biannual print publication that celebrates the creativity of adolescent writers.
