OUR HARLEM TUTORING PROGRAM: canTeens
Canteen magazine is helping middle-school students in Harlem master the literary arts. How? With creative writing workshops taught by Canteen authors such as Gina Gionfriddo, Lorraine Adams, Rich Benjamin, and Porochista Khakpour, as well as a professionally designed and printed magazine filled with student work.

CanTeens students are taught to enjoy writing and to have confidence telling their stories. When they see their work published and present it at public readings, their frustration turns to inspiration. Their newfound love of language—both written and spoken—helps lead these young creative people on a path to lifelong success.

ELLE MAGAZINE
CanTeens recently partnered with Elle magazine through the prodigious efforts of Elle‘s art director, Pippa Lord. Pippa, along with other art and editorial staff from Elle, are teaching canTeens students about the creative aspects of magazine development while helping them put together their very own magazine prototypes. The best one will be featured soon on Elle‘s website. Stay tuned! And see below for a photo gallery of canTeens students working with Elle staff and Canteen authors.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Canteen
magazine began our creative writing workshops in September 2008 at StreetSquash’s facility in Harlem, New York. Our volunteer teachers are all young writers with inspiring records of publication. The best of our students’ work goes into a biannual print publication that celebrates the creativity of adolescent writers.
